In a latest turn of events in the Khuram Sheikh murder trial, Dr Kithsiri Wijeweera, the former Tangalle Hospital Judicial Medical Officer who testified in courts cited that it was not the gunshot injury which killed Sheikh, but the stab injury on his face caused instant death.
Dr. Wijeweera stated that the he performed the autopsy on the corpse of Khuram Sheikh on the evening of December 25, 2011 and found 42 injuries in total. Sheikh was murdered on Christmas Eve in 2011 while his girlfriend was gang raped at the Nature Resort in Tangalle.
He added that the injury caused to the forehead of Sheikh was probably from a T-56 assault rifle. He however added that Sheikh died when a blow to the side of the victim’s nose ruptured a vein and artery which blocked blood supply to the brain.
According to him, some of the other injuries are equally fatal due to internal hemorrhage. He however could not ascertain the exact time of death but inferred that it could have been half an hour before the victim’s last meals. He gave evidence before the Colombo High Court Judge Rohini Walgama led by Senior State Counsel Thusith Mudalige.
